For this installation I wanted to focus on the use of social media in creating online communities and spaces that allow for the exchange of communication and information. More specifically I focused on how social media has allowed for these online communities created by and for diabetics which have provided individuals with a widespread exchange of information, experiences, support, and etc. I also wanted to show the duality of the 'diabetic' life portrayed on social media, because many people will try to be positive and inspiring about it but there is this whole other side that is not as focused. For the installation I created a small designated space by covering part of the floor in a thick blanket. I placed the other items around this are to further push this idea of the blanket being a space. Gallery Instructions  Installation should preferably be set up in a smaller space or corner of the room.  Projector should be placed in an escalated area where it can project facing at a downward angle onto the poster boards.  Set the poster boards up at a slight angle - the space between them should be large enough to fit another board of the same or sightly larger size.  The thick blanket should be folded in half. When placed on the floor it should touch the poster boards.  In the space between the boards place the sharps container and the Rhode Island Hospital box.  In front of the space on the actual blanket, place the other thin blanket. The blanket can be folded or just smooshed together enough to create a soft resting area for the bears.  The bears should be placed on top of the thin blanket right next to each other. Char Davies, Osmose , 1995  Char Davies was born in 1954 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a painter, digital artist, founding director of 3-D software company Softimage, and independent installation artist. Her work focuses on interactive virtual reality installations that create a completely immersive space for viewers. Davies is internationally recognized and  considered a pioneer for her works using virtual reality, specifically her installation  Osmose .  While Char Davies does have a couple more recent installations listed on her website, Immersence, there is literally little to no actual documentation of the installations such as photos or videos of her other work aside from Osmose and  Ephémère . Osmose is her first VR installations, the viewer wears a head-mounted display and motion-tracking vest. Proposal I find the notion of online communities that are sustained by the virtual spaces of social media platforms extremely fascinating and I want to create an installation that focuses on this a bit. More specifically, since November is National Diabetes month and I am a diabetic I think it'd be fitting fo focus on the online communities created by and for diabetics which have provided individuals with a widespread exchange of information, experiences, support, and etc. I really liked the phone projection/mapping done by Taylor in his project 1, and since my installation focuses on online communities I think something like this would work really well into my own installation. For the installation I want to set up a small, cozy, lounge-like area that feels as if it could be apart of someone's room - but there are items within the space that would be out of the norm for someone who does not have diabetes such as a sharps container, medical adhesive remover, or ...

For this installation our group decided focused on dogs and how they help us deal with emotional pain such as stress, depression, and anxiety.  We set up our installation in a separate room to push this sense of an enclosed space to the viewers, and used two projectors to make the most of the room. The installation begins by projecting videos that cause the viewer to feel negative emotions such as stress or discomfort, then the videos are slowly swapped out with videos of dogs until all the videos are of just of dogs completely. The installation ends when actual dogs are brought into the room to interact with the viewers.  The   purpose of the installation is  to show how the  involvement of dogs will change and control the space that they are introduced too. Rafael Lozano Hemmer, Nivel de Confianza (Level of Confidence) , 2015 Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was born and raised in Mexico City, and emigrated to Canada in pursuit of a degree in physical chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal. He is an electronic artist whose work focuses a lot on interactive art that often requires public interaction. Hemmer uses technology to create an environment through his installations that become a platform which encourages public participation from the viewers. I particularly liked Hemmer's work Nivel de Confianza.  In remembrance of 43 male students who were kidnapped from their school in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico and were presumably killed, Hemmer created this piece using facial recognition technology. Proposal    Version 1  For this project, Ivette, Morgan, and I are going to do a project about stress. To do this project we are going to show videos of thing, signs, and symptoms of stress. We want to be able to show how stress affects everyone’s lives regardless of how you live. Stress is also something that some people are considering a disease because of how badly it is affecting everyone. It is also taking away time from the important things in our lives because we are so stressed. To show stress we are going to record videos of ourselves in stressful situations, but then to juxtapose the stress we are going to bring in our dogs. We’re going to bring in our dogs as a way to invite interaction into our piece. Documentation Artists Statement The purpose of my installation project was to bring more attention to the 'feral' cats that live at the University of Tampa since very few people seem to be aware of them despite the fact many of these cats have lived here for years. I took the best videos I could of the feral cats, which wasn't the easiest given how skittish they can be. I then brought the videos in after-affects and rotoscoped them. As a stylistic choice for the older cats, given how dark their fur was against the background, I ended  rotoscoping their bodies and the general area around them to try and create a sort of painted mural look. Since the Feral cats live around the Cass building I projected four rotoscoped videos on the outside and inside of the Cass Building as on a commentary on how they've essentially established themselves here. Bill Viola, Tristan's Ascension,  2014 Bill Viola's creates a lot of immersive installation art through the use of videos and sound that focus a lot on themes like birth, life, death, grief, and love. There are a few articles that have referred to him as being a pioneer for video art. I really like his piece Tristan's Ascension, I find the piece to be so visually striking. I also find it so interesting how even though the water is moving in reverse the physical person does not and it confuses me about how this piece was created. Proposal  I plan to project videos of just the outlines of the feral cats that live at UT onto areas where the cat colonies reside. The videos would be sized to match real life scale and be positioned to give the impression of the cats actually being there. This projection would have to be done at multiple sites, so my plan is to wear some sort of cat mask and essentially give tours/ performance (all at different times and or days) that I would inform people about by passing out flyers that would also provide additional resources for people to look into to learn more. I want to do this because the university has multiple cat colonies but very few people seem to be aware of this. Students either aren't aware of the cats or aren't aware that there are multiple feral colonies. The Tampa Bay area itself has a huge feral cat issue that people don't seem to be aware of and peoples lack of knowledge is making the trap, fix, and release programs in effect much more difficult. ...

I wanted to show how within Florida there is such a drastic difference in social/ economic class that is very visible on the homes of these communities that all live in relatively close proximity to one another. As well as show how these social categories exist as a result of one another, which is why I used a mirror to imply how they are this sort of reflection of each other.

Mike Kelley’s “Kandors” series (1999, 2007, 2009, 2011) Mike Kelley was an eclectic but influential artist who worked with various artistic disciplines. His work often focused on subjects such as "youth, class and the divide between low and high culture" ( 2) . "Kelley has made nostalgia, memory, and repression in everyday life the topics of his idiosyncratic sculptures, performances, paintings, and installations, which conflate vernacular sources and high modernist aesthetics " ( 1) . His works were quirky, and dark - and he definitely liked to focus on subjects/ topics that mainstream society did not like to discuss out in the open like abuse and or mental repressions of trauma. As well as make fun and sort of go against American societies idea of what was 'normal'. Proposal I want to create an installation that focuses on how there is this clear, and at times drastic, visual contrast between areas of different social classes within America. My plan is to collect various items and sort them into two groups. Group 1 would be comprised of items that would be symbolic or in someway represent the Upper Class, while Group 2 would be comprised of items that would represent the Lower Class. Each group would be divided onto its own side. On the side containing items from Group 1 I would project a video showing areas look more lower class, and on the side for Group 2 I would project a video showing areas that look more upper class. I thought that this would not only help in showing the contrast  of social class within communities that are all relatively close to one another, but would also work on a commentary on how greed for immense wealth correlates to poverty.
